This large Notogoneus osculus was found in the famous 18 inch layer of the Green River Formation, near Kemmerer, Wyoming, U.S.A. The fossil is approximately 50 million years old (Eocene).
The fish is 18.75 inches long, from the tip of the snout to the tip of the fin. The entire plate (matrix and fossil), which is a calcite limestone, is 25 inches long, 10.75 inches wide and 0.6 inches thick. The fish is remarkably preserved, with no restoration or repair. It has been color enhanced.
